Capital One Predatory to Seniors

The interest rate on my account went from 7.90% to 17.90% in one month. The account has never been paid late. This is an increase of 127%. I contacted the bank and they said I was sent a letter in May (4 months ago) notifying me that the rate might go up because of "current economic conditions". I went online to the bank's website and found that no notice was sent to me either electronically or by paper. I reviewed every statement that was available and no mention of an increase was ever made. In addition, they supply "Purchase Checks" monthly that say "Transfer a balance at your existing purchase rate. No Fee!" The fee at that time was clearly 7.9%.

I have the same problem. My 7.9% interest for the "Life of the loan" went to 17.9% this month.

I also never received a notice, as they claimed, that the interest rate was being raised. This company is crooked and a bunch of liars! Even if the interest was going up I had 7.9% for the life of my loan. Didn't think this increase would affect me.

Always paid early and more than minimum.

Was never late. Capital One sucks!

Paid in Full Balance draws finance charges

About one month ago I received the letter from Capital one that due to the economy my interest rate was more that doubling from 7.9% i am 51, never late on the payment and rarely carry a balance. last time i check my credit score a couple of years ago i was 799. i was told i had 45 days to pay off the balance at the current 7.9 % or be my rate jumps to 17.9 % on future billings. I took a trip in october 08 and due to some other financing i am doing i carried a balance starting with my november billing. we are talking a 3500 balance with me paying 500 a month. i did not want to pay off the balance and drop my cash at the time because my finances are being looked at for other reasons. after receiving the interest increase letter i paid my balance in full in march. early, before the due date. Now come April i get a bill stating i owe a balance for finance charges from the time my statement was printed until they posted my payment in march. i am suppose to call in for the payoff balance for the day they will post my payment i haven't mailed yet so i can truely pay this off in full. i called numerous times to the service line which takes you out of the country with people not speaking their native language. the first person, Shawn, told me to pay the bill. i asked for a supervisor, was put on hold for about 10 seconds and was "disconnected". i called back again and talked to Carlina to get a supervisor. after 45 minutes on hold, promised only 2 minute hold time, I spoke with Virginia. Again, told it's finance charges and that i should have called for pay off balance. How do i know ahead of time what day they will receive and post my payment? I called a 3rd time and Linda answered. I specifically requested to speak to a native english speaker as i was having trouble understand their accents. this request was refused. i specifically asked if i left my phone number could a native english speaking person call me back. I was also told no. in between these 3 phone calls i called the phone number for new accounts with Capital one. How nice it was to get a live english speaking person the first try, both times. After explaining that i paid my balance in full but still accured finance charges on a new billing cycle they both, once was Eva the 2nd time Leanne, agreed with me. I have 25 day grace period from the billing date to make the payment without incurring more finance charges. However, they were not in a position where they could access my account nor could they transfer me to someone who could help me. Their response was i keep calling the service line and maybe i will eventually get thru without being routed to a foreign country. so, i called back again and spoke to Leann, english still not native language. She would not, or could not, help me speak to anyone who could help me. She kept insisting i tell her what i wanted from my phone call. i repeated this charge was not correct and my reasoing for it citing my statement that tells of the grace period. She told me she has many options she can do for me but again asked what i wanted. i specially asked what those options were but she refused to say. I told her i can not answer her question until she tells me what my options are. Repeatedly she refused. 2 different representitives with the same company telling me 2 different things. one says pay it and the other one says it is in error but they can not help me. to protect my credit rating i will pay the 6 dollars and 8 cents because if i don't not only will it ruin my credit score they will up the rates for late fees and what not's to get even more money. This is what I am talking about, only $ 6.08 in American currency. it is a matter of right and wrong to me. Capital One will not get anyone who can do anything to listen to me. If i want a new card i get excellent service with native tongue speakers. If i've got a problem or a complaint my call is routed out of the country.

This is a repost that I am posting on every Cap one post in hopes that no one will give this company the time of day.

Had our account for 11 years.

NEVER a late payment and always a good customer. We got a "change of terms" in the mail stating that our interest rate was going from 10.5% to 17.99%!!! I called and asked them why and after waiting 20 minutes on hold I got to speak to a person I could not understand and only told me that it was stated on my change of terms mail why. No it wasn't I said.

They finally told me that it was because of my account activity. I asked what exactly they meant because I have an excellent record with them. She told me she couldn't say why. I closed my account.

No more credit cards for us. If anyone is thinking of getting a new credit card right now, please think it through and don't forget to read any fine print.

Laura of the auto dept. should be fired.

The two side mirrors of my car were stolen. I had to make the repair payment from my pocket. My insurance company, Progressive issued a check in both Capital One Bank;s name and my name. I went to the bank's branch on Seagirt Boulevard for an endorsement but the manager on duty said they did not transact such business in that Bank and instead referred me to the one on Mott Avenue. I went to the one on Broadway street in Manhattan. The staff I met said that she had to call the auto department. She did and got the person called Laura who said that I should endorse the check to to the bank to use it to reduce my car loan. I said she had no right to do that and she threatened that that if I did not do as she suggested the chech would be useless to me. I refused reminding her I had used my money to pay for thr repairs and that the money was supposed to be mine. She refused to burge by stating that it is the bank's policy. I was infuriated by this cold and indefferent treatment from this woman. I got up and left and placed a call to my insurance company which suggested I ask to see the manager. I did so and on showing the manager the check I used in making the payment and the repair bill from the repair shop, he, without hesitation signed the check and profusely apologised for the supercillous treatment from the woman Laura. Because of the class act by the manager I had to open a checking account there and then. I am months ahead in my car payment. I therefore did not see why the contemptous treatment from the bank. You nedd to discipline Laura and give more training to your staff in these branches that I mentioned here or else I will close down the checking account I opened yesterday and will never ever transact business with the bank

Took over $100.00 in fees from my account

Capital One Bank assured me that I had $100.00 available on 8/11/09. After making an atm deposit I checked my account in the Great Kills Branch (S.I., NY).I was told not only by the receipt from the atm but also by a Capital One employee that the funds where available in my account. After reporting the error to the Bank I was told they would need time to research this matter. Well 2 weeks later the bank has still not given any of the fees back to me. The week prior I had spoken to the bank manager about this issue. I produced the Atm copy showing the money was available. I called the office again today and they told me they are not giving my fees back. I am furios about this since i was assured that i would not have this problem again. Now What can I do I'm out $105.00

Capital One is greedy hiked interest rate without reason

I am a long time Capital One credit card holder, recently their board made a decision to more than double interest rates on the card I'm carrying making it next to impossible to keep up with payments. My payments doubled for no reason what so ever I have never been late, I've never missed a payment, now during a tough economy they are going to pull this scam. I am outraged about this. I want to spread the word about what their doing to people. I just want everyone to know Capital One is a greedy selfish company who is out to fatten their pockets and drain the pockets of the average consumer who loses his/her job when you're down on your luck they will kick you HARD!!! I have been a long time customer of Capital one and when we refinanced, a few years ago, I paid everyone off canceled all the cards, but kept Capital One because they were always so great to deal with. So to my surprise in June I get the mass mailing, I had to call in cancel the card to keep my same rate which was already a high 16% so it wouldnt jump up into the high 20's...I was never late, and never missed a payment.

So looks like I was getting screwed all along with the high rate, and they tried to make it even worse.

Canceled the card, will pay it down and that'll be it for me! No wonder the country is in such horrible shape, SHAME ON THEM for making it worse and taking advantage of loyal good customers.

Guest

I went from 11.9 to 29.9 no notice no reason given. Capone is an abbreviation for Capital one, appropriately. We're being shaken down by a legalized mafia Financial system

Guest

We had a Capital One Card was never late, when we got the card it was 7.9% and they raised it to 28% with no reason, they would not work with us now they are taking us to court because we can`t pay them and he lost his job.

Between capitol one and bank of america. screwing with my accounts (never late on a payment or over limit ...ever) I hate to think of the impact on my credit score.

they can all eat ***

Guest

i have also been abused by capital one...i have been a member since about 2002 and was at like 21% because of 1 missed payment when i was on bedrest due to high blood pressure being pregant with my son and then having to be out because a c-section and glabladder surgery 6 weeks after having my son. i was finaly able to bring it down to 14.5% only to be raised again with this past raise in rates...this is the only major credit card I have i hope that this lawsuit does good damage to them because it is just not right to do this to people..I sure hope the government does something soon or even have a big government offical open with bill with new hike and he sure won't like it..maybe then something would get down faster

Guest

I just noticed that I got nailed by them too. I called as well...they don't care.

Have been loyal, no late or missed payments and for that they jack up my rate to 17.99.

Was told by them that I should be happy, some rates are 24% or so. Will pay off and never do business with them again.

Guest

I too are a member of the screwed by Capital One club. I've had their credit card since 2003, have never been laid on a payment.

I apparently did not receive or did not open a mass mailing that they sent out to advise their card holders that their interest rate would be raised (in my case from 7.9 to 17.9%) unless they contacted them by a deadline and opted out.

When I received my first bill with this more than doubled interest rate increase, I was advised it was a business decision and there was nothing I could do.

Even though they could not prove to me that they notified me of the increase - they advised me the law is that they have to prove the mailings were sent not that they were actually delivered - there was nothing they could do. Suck it up and pay the increased rate.

I spoke with 3 people - the last being Frank and Account Manager. He said he is proud to work for them and supports their decisions. I asked how many other complaints he has received and he said none. He actually said that there are people out there that supported the rate increase. I asked why would anyone in their right, rational mind say "oh, please more than double my interest rate" .. he said you better get used to it b/c all credit cards will have rates that are a minimum of 17.9% interest. That's the way it is now.

I contacted the lawyer listed above with the class action suit. I'm so glad there is one filed. I told Frank that it wouldn't be long what they are doing is unethical and violating. He said that they are within their legal rights as it states on the back of the application that I signed when I applied for the card.

I said their new motto should be not what's in your wallet but what's in your mail!

I hope anyone that has been screwed by them like me joins this class action suit!

Check this out . . .

Lawsuit claims that Capital One engages in unfair and bad faith business practices with respect to its unilateral increases in the interest rates charged to consumer credit card accounts.

Atlanta, Ga. (PRWEB) August 14, 2009 -- Atlanta attorney E. Adam Webb has filed a class action lawsuit against Capital One Bank alleging that Capital One has operated in bad faith by unilaterally increasing the interest rates on consumer credit card accounts. Capital One has raised rates even for consumers who have always maintained their good standing by satisfying all account requirements, such as making all required payments and not exceeding credit limits. Furthermore, Capital One has taken such action even against those whose credit scores and general creditworthiness have not declined. The suit claims that Capital One, which is headquartered in McLean, Virginia, has engaged in improper and unfair practices in order to increase the revenue it generates via the interest rates imposed on consumer credit card accounts. The case, styled Lemond v. Capital One Bank (USA), N.A., is pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and has been assigned Case Number 1:09-CV-01582-RWS.

According to the suit, Capital One raised the interest rates associated with credit card accounts by over nine percent even though accounts were in good standing and had been at all relevant times. Although Capital One did not purport to impose these new higher rates on balances accrued prior to its notice to consumers, the effect is the same because of the Bank's practice of crediting all payments to the portion of the account balance with the lowest interest rate. In addition, the suit alleges that Capital One's offer that customers could reject this interest rate increase by closing their credit card accounts is inadequate because, as Capital One is well aware, closing a credit line has a negative impact on a consumer's credit score. A lower credit score can cost a consumer thousands of dollars over the term of a home mortgage or other loan. As a result, customers have been forced to accept Capital One's unilateral rate increases.

The Plaintiffs allege that Capital One is liable for all damages that have resulted from its bad faith and improper conduct, to include the differential in interest payments paid by the class members to Capital One.

If you wish to discuss this action or have any questions concerning this press release, please contact E. Adam Webb., Esq. by e-mail at contact(at)webbllc(dot)com or by calling (770) 444-****.

citizen) was that is just the way it is.

What a screw. Can't wait to get these sob's paid off.

Paid off card and still received a bill

Capital one is just a big blood-sucking credit card company. I paid off my balance on time (in fact 10 days ahead of time) and just received a bill for interest. I phoned and asked them to explain...yadayadayada from some donkey's *** I asked to speak to someone that had the authority to write this off!! Oh, she was really into cutomer service (NOT)! She said that the bill I paid off was not the correct amount and that I still owed $23.00. I asked to have it written off and she said NO. I have been a customer for many years and will now cancel my account. After reading some of the horror stories of trying to cancel a card I am scared that these blood suckers will never go away!!

If Capital One is the same as HSBC, they charge a DPR (daily percentage rate). On an HSBC loan, you will see a new balance, but your actual payoff can be $500 to $1K higher and that is due to a 56% DPR.

It's very dirty. Never take a loan from HSBC - you will pay back more than 100% in interest on the loan.

The worse the economy, the dirtier the credit card companies play. By the way, Cap One's CEO makes $74 million per year off the backs of working class Americans.

Capital One / Auto Nagging Tele calls

I co signed on a car loan for my college son. The payment is due on the 11th...no matter if the 11th is a Saturday or Sunday, the automatic calls begins the day after the 11th of the month.

Consider this, the grace period is 10 days to have the payment in...but, the calls don't wait until even the middle of the grace period? It's reported in the credit source as being late, even if the payment is within the grace period. I have never missed a payment and it may have been paid only twice in 3 yrs past the grace period.

how utterly desparate of this company to employ such harrassment! yeah, they will falter...bad customer reps, too.

Did I just read vulgarity and personal attacks from someone claiming to be decent? Interesting

Having said that, it's very obnoxious for those attacking the person who said they were 3 days past the due date sheesh,,I always pay early, but things happen and no need to be obnoxious especially when you don't even know the circumstanes

Guest

Here's a pro tip for you: pay your bills on time and this wont happen. Only in america is this the standard. It is LATE past the due date, no matter what your grace period is.

Guest

Even if you did pay your bills on time, they will find a way to *** over eventually.

I had automatic withdrawal payments for years, then Capital One stopped it. They stopped, it not me.

There was an error on their part and in the end I got screwed over for it. You can't trust Capital One Auto.

Guest

I send my payment out 15 days in advance. I do this will ALL my bills.

Yes, since the economy has been having issues, suddenly, my payments are arriving "late". Once they even called me saying I hadn't made a payment, when the dumb-***'s had already drafted my account.

Capital One sucks donkey ***!Q

Guest

A grace period simply means that is the amount of time you can be late before a late fee is applied. Your payment is still late if it is past the due date.

Guest

The only reason RM doesn't have a fu*tard family is because his d*ick is smaller than his brain. Go to *** you pos and leave decent people alone.

IT WOULD BE A FAIR GUESS THAT THAT STUPIDITY RUNS GOOD IN THE FU*KTARD FAMILY YOU HAVE!!!!,,,,EVER HEARD OF PAYING YOUR BILLS ON TIME??????

Capital One should be avoided at all costs.

I had been a customer in good standing for years with Capital One and enjoyed a low rate on my cards. 2 months ago they sent me a rate change in the mail wanting to raise my raise to over 17%. I called cancelled the cards froze the rate at my low rate and continued to pay them off. I was the victim of theft with my checking account which I made my payments so my bank put a Hold on the account. Well an automatic payment went through to my Cap 1 card but was returned because of the hold and Cap 1 raised my interest to a default rate of 23.3 %. Even though I had never missed a payment and kept the account in good standing they raised the rate. I even called and explained what happen and offered to fax copies of the banks affidavits and police report and they still refuse to do anything to assist me. They want me to wait 90 days before they will consider a rate change when I had never been late before. Scoundrels at best is how I would describe them, what's worse is that these criminals took T.A.R.P funds from the American people then turned right around and started screwing them on their interest rates. The new consumer credit protection legislation won't help either as it doesn't go into effect until next year. Congress likes to pretend they did the American people a favor by passing it but the fact is they wanted to give their campaign contributors enough time to nail customers with fees and interest hikes before the legislation would take effect that's why it doesn't take effect for 9 months. Its practices like this that gives the free market a bad name. I am going to hold off getting another credit card until after the legislation takes effect. You can be sure it won't be with Capital One too. Sincerely, Another Cap 1 victim

Capital One raised my rates on the 2 cards that I had with them without notifying me so i am just going to pay the minimun required until March of 2010 then I qualify to file bankruptcy again so that is what they will get in return from me for doing this. If they had left me alone they would have gotten their money but being they were butt heads they will not be getting their money back. In my opinion they deserve to get screwed.

Capital one Bank is the only bank I know of that does not post cash on the spot. I have another bank account with my credit union and when I deposit cash at the credit union it is available right away...and any pending charges will be covered if I make a cash deposit to cover them if I make a mistake in my account.

Well not Capital one! I had 7 dollars in purchases on a Sunday and I put a deposit of 20 bucks in on monday to make sure I had enough in the account. well I check it Tuesday and I had a bal. of $ 22.17.

Then Wednesday gets here and I have two NSF charges for $35 a piece because they put the pending charges totaling $4.00 in first....then the $20 cash. I was so furious. I called the bank right away and they said someone will call me the next morning. I waited till 9;30 am and I called them Thursday.

The lady WAS RUDE! She said that the charges went through on Monday which was a lie....because our deposit was put in Mon. afternoon and I was still in the positive on Tuesday! The date next to the transactions was for Monday when I checked online so it made it look like my fault.

I finally got her to *** two NSF fees but then the other purchase for $2.14 went through and bounched before I talked to her so she said sense I waited till thurs. she could only *** 2 of them. The way they print their stuff online is so screwy! Also they do not credit payroll checks till the next business day at midnight.

i put in my payroll on a Fri. and it wasnt available till Tues. Morning. I never heard of such a thing in my life.

My credit union posts payroll checks right away with no wait. I will never recommend capital one to anyone!

Capital Rewards Spam Call, Possible Phishing

Over the last three months or so, I've been receiving calls from Capital Rewards, claiming that I've won some sort of reward for using my Visa debit card. Being that I work for the credit union that issued the card, I knew that we had no such program in place. I've instructed them time and time again to not call, and it doesn't help. Finally, I put myself on the National Do Not Call list, and have started reporting this company for spamming and possible phishing. Hopefully, this will stop all the calls, since I've already received two today.

Capital Rewards called me today also and hung up when I asked them why were they calling about my visa card. We should be able to sue these people for the amount of calls from them.

It is clearly harrassment.

A company called Global Marketing has been calling me at least 5 or more calls a day. It is just not right for them to be able to do this every single day.

Guest

does anyone know how to get capital rewards # 866-875-**** blocked from your phone?

Guest

They have been calling me once everyday. I used to ask them everytime to remove me from their calling list, but they would hangup before I could finish the sentence.

So now I just answer the phone and yell expletives at them.

They wont go away. So would you please join me in making the people that work for this vial company feel as bad as possible so that they will quit and the endless cycle will stop!

Capitol One Payment Protection Plan is a ripoff

I want to start by saying that the lowlife SOB'S at Capitol One are a bunch of theives. Myself and a close family friend had the unpleasent oppertunity to deal with these uneducated fools for over a year.

It started when my mother had a Capitol One card, she had this card for quite a while and was never late on any payments. She fell for the scam that they offered for their "Payment Protection", which is supposed to make regular payments in the event that you are disabled.

Unfortunatly, mom started getting sick. In order to keep making house payments, utility payments, and other financial obligations, she kept her job as long as she could, up until the point where she could no longer walk on her own and the doctors said she was disabled. At this time we sent the paperwork that Capitol One claimed that they needed.

The contract says that you must continue to make payments until Capitol One steps in on their plan. A close family friend quit his job to take care of moms daily needs and trips to the doctors which was 200 miles away. The doctors finally came up with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer that had spread to several organs in her body and her brain which did alot of damage.

For 8 months after mom quit working, we kept making payments on all of her accounts, including her Capitol One credit card. 8 months had gone by with several conversations with these bastards. At this point there was no more money to pay Capitol One. so we were forced to stop paying on that account.

At this point the people there were more than happy to send a letter saying that since we had missed a payment we had breached the contract for their Payment protection plan, and therefore they were no longer responsible.

Over the next 8 months, I spent well over 100 hours on the phone, constantly getting transfered back and forth and eventually hung up on. They hired 3 differant lawyers. Each time I received letters from these lawyers I would have to explain the situation to them for a couple of months. The first lawyers firm steped away from the case, as well as the 2nd. After 8 months the 3rd lawyer called and told me they had no case and they were going to drop it.

Mom spent 8 months paying on this account when she had no money coming in, and eventually went to a nursing home. Capitol One had an obligation to pay this and backed out. This was a drop in the ocean for Capitol One, but made this part all of our lives a nightmare. If I could find any one of these *** from Capitol One,I would rip their arms off and beat them with their bloody stumps.

It is unbelievable that a company that size can spend so much time and money trying to rip off a dying woman, all for $1500.00

I'm sorry some of you have had issues. However I became unemployed on 5/6/2013 and I have had no issues getting my benefits started and they have made my monthly payments.

No questions, no hassles. Sure I had to send in proof of being unemployed.

No Biggie, do what is required and know your benefit information and it will go smooth. its not hard to obtain the information on the benefits and how it works.

So, I had been in this program for years and haven't made my payment for almost 4 months now. I called C1 about a week ago and they told me I might qualify for a clam and transfered me over.

Long story short they they accepted my claim in 10 minutes and have now had a very large payment sent to C1 and I'm shocked! They literally payed 1/2 my bill and my minimum is now the lowest its ever been for me! Plus, get this, they are going to pay my minimum for the next 2 payments or until my benefits run out, 2-3 months. I'm still in shock and to be honest its the best $1 for $100 I've spent without even knowing I had even signed up for it.

I must note that I've had this for years and didn't realize it. Also, before this I had never missed a payment with C1 and typically payed twice my minimum every month.

They helped me and I'm sorry for those they could not. In my eyes its not much money for the possibility of something unexpected happening like in my case.

Sorry about your Mum's situation Anonymous.

Having read all these comments I decided to cancel my PPI policy with them which I only started at the beginning of the year as I just don't trust them now.

I found out when I did this (without any argument from them), that they no longer provide this service or policy in the UK. So it seems that over here at least even they don't think the policy is fair.

My only other comment is that some of you would have trouble being taken seriously in the UK. Anon, your first paragraph says C1 are uneducated, you then go on to make so many spelling and grammatical errors as to negate your initial argument. As do several others on this site. Shame on the US education system.

I have the protection plan, called Capitalone to let them know that I was going to be late on a payment because I have been out of work for a couple of months.... they looked into my acct and told me about the plan.

I totally forgot I was paying for it. They connect me to someone else and said they will make a payment starting from the first month I got laid off up til this month and pay my minimal for the next couple of months. Check my online billing and guess what, they did exactly what they said they were going to do. I am pleased with the service.

Sorry so many of you did not experience the same thing I did.

Please call and try again. Memeber since 3 years ago.

Missed a payment, straight to collections

I missed a payment on my card, my fault, missplaced the bill. Got the next bill, due at the end of the month but made the payment immediately because I missed it. Got a call every 3 hours from a company called Allied Interstate on 4th of July weekend, then got a collection letter on Monday. When I call Capital One it goes to Allied Interstate. I can't reach Capital One. I was a satisfied customer until now. How can someone run a company but not have contact with their customers? This is the worst kind of customer service...

KU_Alumn, why would you feel bad for this ***? He's a little boy who doesn't know anything about money, he's got a tiny *** and probably *** his bed.

I finally got ahold of them. They said the Collection people weren't authorized to contact me, especially since I wasn't overdue on more than one payment.

My lawyer is going to file a suit against Capital One and Allied International (collection people).

I understand how credit cards work, thanks.

This was a mistake on my part, which I rectified as soon as I realized my error. I am sick of people blaming terrible customer service on 'policy' and 'the way they do it'.

Dude, I feel for you. However, the Banks that offered credit cards (called revolving debtors), have been impacted by others borrowing from the Banks (namely, mortgage customers who have lost their homes due to the economy). In fact, the smaller Banks borrow from the LARGER Banks, and this compounds the disaster we are now seeing (Larger Banks finance multi-million dollar homes, think about recent Entertainers who have lost their multi-million dollar mansions on the West Coast). The ultimate bank is the Bank of the United States of America, which is essentially you and your neighbors... Tax Payers!

Today, most Banks are stringent on their delinquent accounts. You didn't speak with a real person when you got this call, so that's a good sign. If you don’t have a live person calling you immediately, then you have decent credit – or at least no Collections history with this creditor. If you don't pay quickly, you'll likely get a live person asking for you then playing a recorded message. As you approach your next due date, without payment, you may receive LIVE collection calls from people asking for you, asking you to verify your address, then asking you to pay your bill. You see, credit cards are called Revolving Debts and don't Directly impact your Credit Report (with hard negative marks against your credit report) until you have missed 2 payment Due Dates (called 3-Due at Billing). Loans or Mortgages do not provide this cushion, as they are SECURED Creditors, and they will report you as late to the Credit Bureau when you are late on one payment (called 2-Due) and may pursue Car Repo at 3-Due, and/or Foreclosure at the same. This is why you are advised to contact these Secured creditors after you miss 1 payment, and BEFORE you miss the 2nd payment, to avoid negative consequences.

If you don't mind calls at home, but not at work. Just politely ask them to call you at home because you are not allowed Personal Business calls at work, emergencies only (they don't need to know if you can talk casually with family by phone at work, when appropriate).

Good Luck :-)

Raised interest rate w/out receiving notice

have never been late or gone over my limit. I needed a balance transfer and was offered a 4.99 fixed rate by Capital One. I took it I never used the card except for the transfer. Well much to my surprise my rate change happened this billing cycle. I thought it was mistake. My rate went to 14% I called one Sat morning and was told I UNDERSTAND by several representatives but there is nothing we can do. That I should be happy that my rate was 14% and not higher. Finally I got a supervisor and I was told that since I did not reply by April when a statement was sent out in Feb that my rate changed and that was final. I never received this so called statement everything I do is online. I was told that they sent it via my physical address and I probably lost it. When I complained telling them I am customer in good standing they did not care. I was told that because of the economy they changed the rates, that I was notified, and that was that. I could go to a different company if I wanted to. I could not believe it I called again, emailed, even had a so called manager call me on the phone and again was told I UNDERSTAND I even had one representative tell me I'm a single dad and my rate went up 24.99?!?!?!? I can't wait to close this account. THEY DON'T CARE THEY WOULD RATHER GET MORE PEOPLE AND HAVE THEM DEFAULT THEN USE THE BAIL OUT MONEY TO BAIL THEM OUT. DO NOT USE CAPITAL ONE!!!!

Capital one not closing accounts and playing games

Capital one keeps sending me bills. I call them and their reps play games and tell me everything is taken care of. Later I get late payment notifications.I have paid them off multiple times and they say its a gliche in their system. These guys are truly criminals and a very bad company. They hit you with these slicky slick charges and play date games. Its a wonder they are still in business the way they treat their customers. I thought this would be taken care of by the rep I spoke with 3 bills ago, but the games continue.

I closed an account 5 yrs ago with them & someone was able to change the address & phone # info for the account, reopen it & request new cards. They also sent checks with the cards & now on an account that was closed for 5 years it has $6,500 charged to it.The checks have a forged signature of my wifes name on them but it does not match hers.I sent them a certified letter on Feb 1st & have yet to hear from them. They say they don't have the info on ever closing this account. This company is just a bunch of legalized crooks.I will not pay for anything I didn't charge. I'll file bankruptcy first.

Guest

we closed an account only to have a ss check reopen it and then a stop payment was made from this closed account now we are in the red in the closed account,

Guest

I just called Capital One today (9/04/09)to ask about my recent payments . I felt like I was in an Abbott & Costello movie.

Remember "Who's on First?". I was told I made a payment on 8/9/09 to cover Sept. payment. Then he told me I paid the same amount again on 8/28/09 for the same month.

When I questioned him about the 8/9 payment he wanted to know who told me I made a payment on 8/9. When I told him YOU DID--A MINUTE AGO.

HE WENT IN TO REPEAT ROUTINE. I spoke with his supervisor and told her to send him home until he sobers up or quits smoking those funny cigarettes.

Capital One is very Dissappointing

I recently opened up a Capital One account as a way to continue to build my credit. But I was very dissappointed with the charge for paying your bill via telephone on time along with the overcharge fee of 20.00 for any amount over your credit limit. I get very frustrated when I pay my bill on time and call for information regarding the amount availiable and if I charge before fees are taken out I am charge another overthe limit fee which is crazy. I am planning to close my account and keep my debt card that I can load money on for two dollars.

Capital One Fraud Alert while on vacation

We have been a Capital One credit card holder for several years.......last summer, we left Houston, Texas for a cool climate for 30 days in the mountains of N. C. When we attempted after a couple of days to purchase a large amount of groceries, Capital One had put our card on fraud notice.....could not use the card. While in the grocery checkout line, I called the 800 number on the back of the card and got India....One of your hired Indians from India stated there was nothing wrong with our card. This happened one more time the next day. I then called a Capital One Bank in Houston and was given a local (804) phone number in Richmond to talk with someone in Richmond who knew what they were talking about...got it all handle in the great country of the United States. Recently, I called the customer service number again...I did not get India...I got the Phillipines...same thing.....no help...did not understand what I was trying to explain. Why do you companies do this???????All you do as your website states is *** OFF your customers. This summer I am planning another trip for about three weeks to North Carolina...whom to do I call to tell?? that understands and can flag our account to keep in acitve and from being placed in fraud???? PLEASE HEPL!!!!!!!!! James A. Rader

You haven't lived until this happens to you overseas after you have submitted a travel alert telling them you would be overseas. The instructions are to get a live international operator and place a collect call.

Pretty impossible to do that in Sweden these days. They absolutely refuse to resolve the situation in email. Capital One is in the Middle Ages here. If they had chip and pin codes as they do in Europe (you must enter the pin code when making purchases) there would be much less need for them to post silly fraud alerts.

By the way, the *culprit* appears to be a $267 charge made in Stockholm. The travel alert does say Norway and Sweden.

Some employee did not check to see that it existed and then placed the financial burden of resolving it on me. Thank you very much, Capital One

Guest

They did me the same way.....lol. What did they say when you didn't verify your information

Guest

My credit card agreement protects me from liability for fraudulent transactions, so when Capital One arbitrarily decides that I shouldn't have bought something I'm not grateful, but annoyed.

Guest

Gosh...read all of these.

Icouldn't even travel in my own state and use the card for gas and food, and then I was shut down with fraud alert

Capital One needs to be investigated for internal identity theft. Got card...didn't have it but for a week. Fraud alert put on it for no reason. Called them. They wanted driver's license copy, utili. bill, and the kicker, paystub/1099/income tax form all this to prove it was me. I told them to shove it when they would not accept just a utility bill and driver's license copy.

Guest

It all began with travel plans for a trip to Australia. In discovering that my bank, Wells Fargo, charges "foreign transaction fees" in the use of their card abroad, I did some internet searching and discovered that "Capital One" was recommended for a travel credit card because they don't charge "foreign transaction fees" for purchases abroad. Being an individual against credit cards, I went against my better judgement and applied for a Capital One Card. Since I don't already have a credit card, they approved me on January 17th, 2011 for a "secured Master Card" requiring a $200 deposit. I went ahead and transferred from my bank $250 so that I would have that amount to use for foreign transactions. Not hearing from Capital One for a month and a half, I became concerned. Finally I get a letter from Capital One to my home address stating that they put a temporary hold on my Capital One Account to make sure no one is using my Capital one credit card without permission. However, Capital One had not yet sent me a card. I received phone calls from their “fraud” department requiring me to submit a utility bill to prove who I am. Since I'm about to embark upon a journey abroad, I was renting a room from a friend pre-travel. Since I did not have a utility bill, as it was all inclusive in my rent. The agent then said I had to send my bank statement or my W2 forms. Invasive? Certainly. That they needed my Bank Account Statement or W2 form was none of Capital One’s business. If they were giving me a loan that might be different, but a secured card is me giving them money to loan back to me. I thought this was ridiculous. I told the agent this, he agreed, but claimed it was their policy.

He then claimed I could circumvent this by driving to any bank, preferably where my bank is, and have them do a visual identity check. I had to leave early from work to do this before the bank closed. Wells Fargo said they would not do that for other banks. I called back the agent who then said if I faxed my drivers license, passport, and/or social security card, it would remove the hold and Capital One would send me the card. I drove an additional 10 miles to a fax outlet, paid them $3 to fax Capital One a copy of my passport, drivers license, and social security card. The next day, Capital One stated these documents were received, but were not worthy of identity proof. Really? A US Passport? Drivers license? Social security card? They then stated they required a bank statement or W2 form. I stated I only wanted this account because Capital One doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, and I would be leaving soon for a trip to Australia. He said he found a “Chase bank” at 3306 Centennial Blvd in Colorado Springs who was willing to do a visual ID check. He even had a representative named “Krista” who said she would do it. So ONCE AGAIN, I leave work early, to drive 10 miles to this said bank, to make sure I arrive before the bank closes. The representative at Chase wasn’t informed that I did not have a bank account with Chase. Just like with Wells Fargo, they will not do a visual identity verification for another bank unless I was one of their clients. Again, Capital One had cost me “time away from work”, “expenses in gas and time driving, wear/tear on my vehicle, for useless trips. As this was the third trip they had caused me to drive when gas prices are at a stunning $3.30-3.50/gallon now? As my current rate of pay at the time was $26 an hour anyone could do the math to see that Capital One has already cost me more time than this card was worth.

Figuring if this is representative of the hassle that Capital One is going to give me in using their card, I don’t want the service. I told them to send me back my money. The representative said he didn’t know how and couldn’t. Really? Capital One representatives are not informed on how to do reversals? Send me back my money to the account it came from? If me, an average Joe can do it with credit card transactions I accept from clients through Quickbooks, I guarantee their agents could do it immediately. The agent suggested I dispute the charge with my bank to get my money back. I did this, and Capital One refused to release the funds as it is a valid authorized deduction. A couple of days later I receive the card stating I now owe “$29.00” for a membership fee. Really? Capital One charging me a membership fee for a service I cannot use? I call Capital One and they still state I cannot use the account or get a refund without sending my Bank Statement. I fax them my statement. It takes them 3 days to get back to me. I called their “Fraud” department. The Agent said they had received my bank statement, but my representative had to call me back to verify the account. On March 16th, I Faxed a letter to their office and mailed copies requesting full refund of money. I finally get in touch with them and on 3/17/11 I speak to their agent Shyr. She asks personal info again from me. She had the nerve to ask for my pin number for my debit card with Wells Fargo. Excuse me? She claims they cannot verify my bank information with Wells Fargo. She put me on hold for 20 minutes. Finally Capital One gets “Olivia” from Wells Fargo on the line. They warn me that the 3rd party on line exchanging sensitive information, I accepted for certain private information. Upon mentioning the claim # I did with Wells Fargo, Olivia ouldn’t pull up on her display, and then connected us 3-party with Chris at Wells Fargo claims. He notated the conversation and updated my claim. He was witness to “Shyr” stating they would return the money that day. I was put on hold for another 15 minutes while “Shyr” transferred me to “Kyle” of Capital One’s Retention / Account Closure department. He was very apologetic with my Capital One experience and said he submitted the transaction to refund my money. He stated it would take 5-7 business days to appear in my account. No refund was received by 3/28/11. So I contacted Capital One inquiring where is my money on 3/29/11. Agent "Joseph" said the previous Capital One representative should not have said 5 business days, For Joseph said it will take 2 billing cycles to return money. I told him this was not acceptable. Capital One had my money for over 45 days with no services delivered but hassle and waste of my time. I need my money back. I Told them I’m going to file complaints with state attorney office, Better Business Bureau, The Department of finance, etc. He promised that my funds would be returned electronically Friday at the latest on Monday that the account representatives are refunding my money now. On May 31st, I received a Refund check in the mail for $250. Relieved I Deposited it. I then receive on April 5th notice from my bank that Capital One put a stop payment on the refund check and now Capital One was charging me a return item fee. On 4/7/11 I called Capital One to find what was up. I spoke to Supervisor Lor and explained the situation – she said she doesn’t see a stop payment request so was investigating the matter. Nothing showing up in her computer. She took my direct deposit information and said she would get it straightened up but no action resulted by 4/21/11. Capital One has now stolen my money and has held it hostage for over three months and have not delivered product, services, only hassles and headaches. To all fellow travellers and individuals thinking about using Capital One - Avoid them at all costs. They are thieves. This article will be updated if and when action is taken to repair the damages done by Capital One - or if the fact that their action of holding my money hostage leaves me stranded while travelling abroad. I see a lawsuit in the making.

IHave you informed the company of your travel dates and location? This would lessen the instance of transactions being flagged.

We must be thankful enough that they monitor unusual transaction. (unusual amount of transactions or area where card was used.
